Limiting the Risk of Transmitting Dental Disease
Current studies indicate that periodontal disease can be contagious. This does not mean that we want you to stop kissing your loved ones. We just want you to learn what you can do to reduce the risk of transmitting gum disease to members of your family. We usually think of periodontal disease as a result of plaque and calculus build-up. As far back as the 1890's, scientists were studying the role that bacterial infection played in periodontal disease. Modern technology has allowed scientists to get a much better look at bacteria. We're now able to isolate and identify almost twenty different strains of bacteria connected with periodontitis. Current studies suggest the transmission of these same bacteria place family members at risk.
Like any other transmittable disease or infection such as the flu or a cold, there are strategies you can apply to reduce the risk. Visiting a periodontist for disease detection and treatment is a very important gum disease control strategy.
