Ozone Therapy in Dentistry

It is a belief of our practice that periodontal health and whole body health are integrally related. All inflammatory conditions of the body have common inflammatory mechanisms of breakdown and repair. All modes of periodontal therapy are a means of reestablishing a healthy oral condition, including retention of teeth and supporting bone, as well as positively influencing healing in other areas of the body by reducing the source of chronic infection.
Periodontitis is primarily an immune reaction to mixtures of bacteria, virus, parasites and fungi growing under the gums. Contemporary periodontics attempts to address this infection by the reduction of microbes and their toxic byproducts. Chronic infection includes vascular congestion, stagnation of blood flow through capillaries, fermentation, and a condition of acidosis (too much acid) and oxidosis (loss of electrons). This results in lack of nutritional and immune support to the tissue which can lead to chronic bone loss as well as loss of teeth. Areas in the mouth where your dentist has measured periodontal pockets greater than 4mm become oxygen reduced, acidic eco-systems where anaerobic microbes thrive in thick biofilms.
Ozonated water is created when oxygen and ozone gases are bubbled through pure distilled water. Water that is infused with ozone molecules is as safe and healthy to drink as any usual source of water.
Ozone in therapeutic doses restores tissue health by removal of microbial pathogens from biofilm and porous openings in the root structure. It increases blood flow to the area with immune enhanced red blood cells and allows for better lymphatic drainage. Ozone is very effective and has very little risk. Ozone does minimal harm to beneficial microbes (which thrive in an alkaline environment) and healthy cells when used in recommended therapeutic protocols. Ozone therapy is used around the world in medicine to treat anaerobic (oxygen lacking) wounds which are more difficult to heal.
If periodontal health is not restored by scaling and root planning, which is conventionally done to mechanically disconnect calcified pathogens attached to the root surface, ozone in the form of water irrigation, tissue infusion, or total saturation with oral micro-baric ozone trays is a safe and effective way to eliminate pathogens and reestablish health of the tissue.
Patients can also perform ozonated water oral rinses post surgically at home and as a maintenance routine, as well as brushing with ozonated olive oil. The ozonated water we provide in the office is different from the ozonated water you can buy at health food stores or the ozonated water currently being used in many swimming pools and hot tubs. These waters are treated with ozone gas to essentially remove any microbial contamination to provide very clean water. The ozontated water we use in the office is at a significantly higher concentration of ozone to create a therapeutic effect on the tissue and oral environment.
Dr. Ford provides you with this form of biologic therapy should it be applicable to your treatment needs. Dr. Ford has completed the Advanced Training: Oxygen/ozone therapy in Dental Medicine, American College of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry.
